The Active Community Walking Programme aims to support the creation of vibrant walking communities throughout Ireland.
The programme works with communities to increase the capacity and potential of people with low levels of physical activity to become more active through walking.
Donegal Sports Partnership has supported the establishment of 12 walking groups across the county through the support of the ACWP since 2015. The programme consists of an 8 week tutor led programme which focuses on improving your functional fitness and enhancing your walking technique. Qualified Irish Heart Foundation Community Walking leader will assist the group each week with;
- Route selection (surveying their area, safety considerations)
- Group management (varying abilities)
- introduce them to Warm ups,
- Walking technique i.e posture, stride/power walking – with an overall aim of getting the most out of your Walking Workout!
On completion of the programme, group/group leaders should have all the tools and resources to establish their own community walking group and be completely self-sufficient.
