New Swim Shelters Installed for Buncrana and Mountcharles Swimmers

Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) is pleased to announce the successful delivery and installation of two new Swim Shelters at Ludden Beach, Buncrana and Mountcharles Pier, thanks to funding received through Sport Ireland’s Swimming Infrastructure Fund.

These custom-designed shelters, supplied by Croom Concrete (Limerick), are now in place and ready for use by the vibrant communities of Open Water Swimmers who visit these locations daily. The shelters provide a private, weather-protected space where swimmers can hang their dry robes and clothing while enjoying a swim!

DSP has identified a number of other locations based on their regular use by open water swimmers throughout the year and will focus on these sites over the next few months as part of its ongoing efforts to improve outdoor swimming infrastructure in the county.

The delivery of these shelters marks an important step in supporting and growing participation in outdoor recreation in Donegal. DSP would like to extend sincere thanks to Donegal County Council for their support in bringing this project to life.

Speaking about the project, Declan Boyle, Coordinator of Donegal Sports Partnership, said:

“The installation of these swim shelters represents a major improvement in the experience for local swimmers. It’s a practical and positive development that encourages more people to enjoy the health benefits of open water swimming while offering that bit of privacy and comfort also. We’re grateful to Sport Ireland for recognising the value of these amenities.”

This initiative reflects Sport Ireland’s and the Local Sports Partnerships ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure that supports inclusive and active lifestyles, while making best use of our natural resources.

DSP would also like to express sincere thanks to Kevin Mc Closkey, Coastal Officer with Donegal County Council, for his valuable assistance and support throughout this project.

The shelters are now open to the public, and DSP encourages both new and seasoned swimmers to take full advantage of these new facilities.
