Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) officially launched its fifth Strategic Plan (2025–2029) at an event held on Monday, 9th June at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in Letterkenny. The new strategy sets out a bold and inclusive vision to grow participation, strengthen community partnerships, and promote lifelong physical activity throughout the county.

The launch attracted representatives from local clubs, community groups, national governing bodies, and partner agencies. Keynote speakers included Dr. Una May, CEO of Sport Ireland, and Charlie McConalogue, Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy.

Dr. May praised DSP’s commitment and leadership in sport development:

“Donegal Sports Partnership has consistently demonstrated innovation and dedication in promoting sport and physical activity. Their community-driven approach makes them a national example of best practice, ensuring that all individuals can benefit from the power of sport.”

Minister McConalogue formally launched the plan and highlighted the importance of sport for wellbeing and community:

“I’m delighted to launch Donegal Sports Partnership’s Strategy 2025–2029 at ATU Letterkenny. This plan builds on years of work to ensure that everyone in Donegal, regardless of age or background, has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity. I commend the Partnership for its ongoing commitment to inclusion and community wellbeing and wish CEO Declan Boyle and his team every success.”

A key moment of the evening was the acknowledgement of the national award recognising Donegal Sports Partnership’s outstanding work funded through the European Social Fund (ESF). The award celebrated the Sport 4 Empowerment (S4E) project, delivered in partnership with Donegal Domestic Violence Services (DDVS), which provides women affected by domestic abuse the opportunity to rebuild their confidence and connect with others through physical activity in a safe and supportive environment.

The S4E initiative is led by Thérèse Laverty on behalf of Donegal Sports Partnership, in collaboration with Jessica Gallagher (DDVS), with both playing key roles in the delivery of the project. Dr. Marie Hainsworth, CEO of Donegal Domestic Violence Services, delivered a powerful message on the night, highlighting the impact of the programme and the importance of collaboration in creating meaningful change for women in the community.

Chairperson PJ Hallinan welcomed guests and spoke briefly on the strategy’s significance:

“This plan represents our continued commitment to making sport accessible to all in Donegal. It builds on strong collaboration and highlights the positive impact sport has on community wellbeing and lifelong participation.”

PJ also paid tribute to former CEO Myles Sweeney for his 18 years of dedicated leadership, which laid the groundwork for this new chapter.

Current CEO Declan Boyle introduced the strategy by highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities presented by Donegal’s vast geography and diverse communities. He emphasised the central role of community partnerships and volunteers in delivering programmes and ensuring no area of the county is left behind.

Declan noted the extensive consultation process behind the plan, involving grassroots clubs, national bodies, and community groups, ensuring the strategy reflects the real needs of Donegal’s sporting community. He outlined a clear focus on increasing engagement, capacity building, and strengthening partnerships for long-term sustainability.

He also stressed the importance of collaboration with key partners such as Sport Ireland, Donegal County Council, the HSE, and various statutory and community organisations, praising their ongoing support and investment.

“This strategy is a shared vision for an Active Donegal, where sport is more than recreation, it builds resilience, fosters social inclusion, and supports wellbeing. Together, with our partners and communities, we will shape a stronger, healthier Donegal for generations to come.”

The launch event also featured live activity sessions with three local groups showcasing inclusive physical activity: Donegal Down Syndrome, Manorcunningham Active Seniors, and Bridgestock Letterkenny, who engaged attendees with their inspiring participation and energy.

Developed through broad community consultation and informed by national and international best practices, the Strategic Plan 2025–2029 charts a clear course for a more active, inclusive, and connected Donegal.
