Join the fun for Bike Week 2013

Bike Week 2013 takes place between the 15 – 23rd June with a range of events planned to suit everyone. Bike Week is about participation and the enjoyment of cycling and once again building a cycling culture across the country. Bike week is about all 32 counties hosting events to get everyone cycling, so dust down your rothar and join the fun for Bike Week 2013.

In the North West The Tri-County Challenge, part of the Bike Week 2013 festival, will take place on Saturday 22 June and offers cyclists the choice of 80mile, 40 mile or 10 mile routes through Derry~Londonderry, Donegal and Tyrone. The cross-border charity ride is being organised by Sustrans, Donegal Sports Partnership and local clubs Foyle, Four Masters, North Pole and Strabane-Lifford CC.

Ten Town 10k cycle events will take place across Co Donegal hosted by local cycle clubs and community sports organisations. We encourage everyone to come along and enjoy these cycling events which will include children cycle skills and challenges, cycle workshops, novelty bike events and giveaways. Letterkenny, Buncrana, Dungloe, Carndonagh, Fahan, Donegal Town, Falcarragh have already signed up for events. Family Fun Day – Relay For Life

A fun family walk will take place in the Gartan Outdoor Education Centre on Sunday 19th May at 2:00pm. The walk is between 3 and 5km’s and registration is 1:00pm at the Heritage Centre.
Cost is Adults: €10.00 with Children FREE. Further details from Maria on: 086 1703991. All proceeds go to the the Relay for Life.

Wheelchair Basketball

Donegal Sports Partnership are holding a Wheelchair Basketball Event on the 8th of June 2013 in An Dánlann Sports Centre, LYIT. The event is FREE of charge and targets those aged U17 years. Anyone however irrespective of age is welcome to come along on the day and meet those involved. We are delighted that both the Irish Wheelchair Association Sport and the Galway Speeders Junior Club will also be in attendance. Please circulate to anyone you feel might be interested in attending.

Children’s Officer Workshop

Applications are invited for a proposed Children’s Officer Workshop to be held in our offices in Letterkenny on Saturday 8th June, stat time 10:00am.

Applicants must have completed the Child Protection Basic Awareness workshop provided by either the Donegal Sports Partnership or the Health Service Executive.

Get Ireland Walking – a new national walking initiative

Get Ireland Walking is a new national walking initiative, funded by the Irish Sports Council and the Health Service Executive (HSE), led by Mountaineering Ireland, and supported by the Irish Heart Foundation, HSE Health Promotion, Age and Opportunity, Gaelic Athletic Association, Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management, Arthritis Ireland, and others.
The initiative exists to maximise the number of people participating in walking: for health; wellbeing and fitness, throughout Ireland. Our vision is:
A culture of walking throughout Ireland resulting in improved health, wellbeing and fitness for society and significant savings in health expenditure.
Our objectives include, to unify and enable the efforts of all recreation, sporting and health promotion agencies and associations interested in promoting walking and to promote, encourage and support people to get walking.
Get Ireland Walking will work to achieve its vision by: providing information, advice and guidance about walking; signposting people to other agencies/organisations active in this area; supporting the setup and development of walking groups and projects through the provision of insurance cover for volunteer walk leader and the development of a database of all walking groups which will be available on our website www.getirelandwalking.ie.

GymSTART is a programme developed by Gymnastics Ireland designed to drive participation in the club and school setting by creating a safe, progressive and fun environment for all.

Active Donegal June 2013 Just Try It

Following on from the success of the Active Donegal 2012 with over 250 events it’s now time to once again celebrate all that is positive about sport. All of Donegal are most welcome to take part in the biggest sporting participation programme of the calendar year.
In 2012 approximately 5,000 people of all ages and abilities walked, jogged, swam, cycled, played games, rowed, sailed, canoed, pushed, pulled, rolled, jumped, skipped, and fished during June 2012 Active Donegal month – Just Try It , we want to surpass last years Active Donegal month with more events, more challenges to allow more people to take part in sport and physical activity and get the benefits of the Just Try It campaign.

Through the Active Donegal Campaign during the month of June 2013 we want the people of Donegal to ‘Just Try It’ , come out and take part in some type of physical event in your community either in one of our organised community or sports events or as a group of friends going for a walk or cycle . The campaign is for everyone and will also be an opportunity for local communities and sports clubs to highlight and promote their own sports and clubs to the general public which could be a useful platform for getting additional volunteers.
Highland Radio will be our main media partners for the event through the John Breslin morning show and the Lee Gooch evening show.

I therefore invite you to the Press Launch of Active Donegal Month – June 2013 which will take place in the Chamber of the Public Services Centre, Letterkenny on Thursday 2nd May at 4pm. This launch will entail a few quick words about the initiative and some photos so it will not take too much of your valuable time. This launch will also coincide with launch of our new website www.activedonegal.com which we know will also be a valuable support to promoting our campaign. We would encourage all agencies to send a representative and to take their organisation pull up sign as we want the launch to reflect a multiagency approach.
